What to know about PT-141

PT-141 is bremelanotide, a melanocortin-receptor agonist studied for centrally mediated sexual-desire outcomes rather than vascular effects alone.

How it may work
It activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system. The exact pathway responsible for measured sexual-desire changes is not fully resolved.
What research found
Two phase 3 trials randomized 1,267 premenopausal women and found statistically significant improvements in desire and related-distress measures versus placebo, with modest absolute changes.
What is not settled
Nausea, flushing, and headache were common in trials. The licensed label also addresses transient blood-pressure increases, focal hyperpigmentation, and use limits.
Research and product status
Bremelanotide has a licensed U.S. product for a specific population and use. Research vials are not equivalent to that product.

Research reference

~14 hours — about five half-lives with regular repeated exposure; not time to a result
Storage
Storage and in-use limits depend on the exact formulation and packaging. A compound name alone cannot establish temperature, diluent, or shelf life. Details

When results may show

When change was measured
The licensed bremelanotide label uses an as-needed dose at least 45 minutes before anticipated activity, while noting that the duration and optimal window are not fully characterized.
When to assess
The label provides an eight-week reassessment point for its licensed population and use. Results from that standardized autoinjector should not be assumed for other formulations or populations.
Conditions and limitations
The licensed evidence does not require food, a special time of day, or another compound. It does require the labelled population, subcutaneous autoinjector, cardiovascular screening, and dosing limits.
When to stop
The label says to discontinue after eight weeks if symptoms have not improved, and to consider discontinuation for hyperpigmentation or persistent or severe nausea. Its other warning signs also take precedence.

Research timing is descriptive, not a promise or personal instruction. A severe or persistent reaction needs prompt clinical review. This is not medical advice.
